Domestic abuse survivor finds the right kind of love in the man who saved her.
Having a tragic past, it is hard to stand up and try again. Yet Melissa Dohme, was able to love again after giving herself a chance to find the right one. As it turns out, fate had a different way of giving it to her.
There are times that you have had enough, and Melissa felt exactly that. Having broken up with her ex-boyfriend, Robert Burton, she refused to answer his calls and texts. She thought he’d leave her alone after a while, but Robert did not stop pestering her, begging her to see him. In her interview with Daily Mail, she recalled, “It just seemed kind of pathetic and I really just wanted to get it over with so I can go back to sleep. So I reluctantly agreed.”
Little did she know that Robert had an entirely different scenario in his mind. As they met up, he asked her to hug him. Thinking the guy needed some closure, she agreed and did just that. Robert had a different agenda, as he embraced her, he quickly stabbed her 32 times using two different knives and left her bleeding to death on the street.
She was in critical condition when police and paramedics found her on the street, but Melissa was still able to tell them who attacked her. She was then airlifted to Bayfront Medical center in St. Petersburg, Fla. Surgeons did their best and managed to save her, while police were able to locate Robert Burton. They found him in a crashed car overdosed with sleeping pills. He was attempting to suicide after what he did.
A broken jaw, severed nerves, shattered teeth and facial bones were only a few to name of what she had to go through. At one point she suffered partial paralysis and had to learn to talk, walk, write and eat. When it seemed like giving up was the only option, Melissa didn’t give up and told herself, ‘’ yes, I can”.

She bravely faced her attacker in court and retold the story of the attack. Robert then surprised everyone by pleading guilty. Melissa shared that she’s forgiven Robert and here’s why, “When you choose to forgive those who hurt you, you forever take away their power and that’s what I’m doing today. Robert, I forgive you for coming to my house and attempting to murder me.”
After dealing with her past and recovered from her wounds, Melissa took a trip with her friends. As soon as she came back, she decided to embrace life and start by reaching out to every person who did their best to save her. She managed to show her appreciation to everyone except the firefighter-paramedics at Clearwater station.

She was giving a speech at the Clearwater church, when two of the firefighter-paramedics approached her. One of them was Cameron Hill, the paramedic who saved her. They’d talked, hugged and ended up exchanging numbers. They met again over dinner and talked for 5 hours, romantic feelings grew and Melissa was caught by surprise. In an interview with People she said, “I didn’t think it was possible. I didn’t even want to like anyone.” She admitted, “I didn’t even want to open my heart up to anything. I was afraid, but then I met Cameron.”
